How to quit Prilosec, (Omeprazole) and Zantac (Ranitidine)

This Blog details how to quit taking the Acid Reflux drugs Prilosec (also called Losec, OMesec) as well as Zantac (ranitidine) in order to minimize rebound symptoms.
Let me start out by saying that I am not a medical professional. This blog details my own personal experience in transitioning off of PPI (Proton pump inhibitor) reflux (GERD) drugs and is in no way meant to be taken as medical advice. I solely wish to provide the step by step method for quitting Prilosec that I wish someone had shown me.

If you are considering cutting down on your acid reflux medication please talk to your doctor first.

Since most of you are probably here seeking the nuts and bolts of how to quit Prilosec , I will start with a simple explanation of how I did it, and follow it with my own history and experience.

I was first prescribed a single 20 MG Prilosec a day. Eventually I got to the point where I was taking two 20MG Prilosec pills a day ( one before breakfast and one before dinner) and 150mg of Zantac (ranitidine) at bed time.

From my experience, if you suddenly stop taking the drugs you will experience severe acid reflux and heart burn symptoms. In my case they were far more severe than anything I had ever felt. Therefore, tapering down slowly is probably the best method for quitting. When I first started cutting down, I tried various strategies with varied results. Finally I was able to quit and now have no issues with GIRD, although I am also much more careful about what I eat, and use a lot of Acid Reflux related cook books.  Anyway,   here is what finally worked for me.

Step #1
Buy a Pill Cutter.

You can find a pill cutter at your local pharmacy or online.  This will allow you to cut your Prilosec and Ranitidine.  You can use a knife until you get one, but since you'll be cutting into 1/4s it gets messy.

Step #2
Start by cutting out ¼ of your pill. If you take 20mg once a day, start by cutting your pill into four pieces and take 15mg instead. The following day take a full 20mg. Alternate between 15mg and 20mg every other day. Keep this up for 2 weeks. If you don’t have any rebound symptoms, it’s time to move on. If you have reflux symptoms, keep going another two weeks, or until your symptoms subside.

I experienced some rebound symptoms every time I dropped my dosage. The symptoms usually start to become noticeable somewhere between 5- 10 days after cutting the dosage.

Buy antacids such as Tums or Mylanta (Aluminum hydroxide/ Magnesium Hydroxide). You can use these periodically to treat your rebound symptoms. Many people also swear by Kefir, a yogurt like drink full of probiotics. Apparently it has many bacteria not found in yogurt that can aid digestion.  You can find kefir in the dairy section of any natural foods store as well as Trader Joes or Whole Foods. I've been told drinking a cup a day helps.

If you take 40mg a day as I did, I would still recommend cutting it out in 5mg intervals.

Step #3
Once you’ve adapted to your reduced dosage of alternating between 15mg and 20mg each day (35mg and 40mg if you take 2 Prilosec a day) it’s time to graduate to the next step. Start taking 15mg each day(3/4 of one pill) without alternating.  Use the same strategy for step #2 and keep Tums and Mylanta on hand to combat rebound symptoms.

After 2-4 weeks you will hopefully reach baseline again. Over the course of cutting down you may hit a point where it takes you more than 4 weeks to reach baseline, don’t fret. This happened to me multiple times during the process. Just stick with it. If you have a really bad day, you can try temporarily going back up to your previous dosage.

Step #4
Now you essentially repeat step #2 and begin alternating daily between 10mg and 15mg. (30 and 35mg if you take 2 each day).

Step #5
Begin taking just 10mg each day. See Step #3

Then you essentially repeat these steps until you have slowly tapered down.
Using this method you will be off Prilosec in about 4-8 months if you only take 1 20 mg pill a day….8-16 months if you take 40mg a day.

Step #6 (Zantac- skip if you don’t take Zantac)
If you also take Zantac along with your Prilosec, now is the time to start cutting your Zantac dosage. You can cut down on Zantac the same way as Prilosec.

Cut your Zantac into 4 pieces using the pill cutter and begin taking ¾ of a pill one day, and a full pill the next day. Alternate each day just like you did with Prilosec.

Maintain your Prilosec at 10mg daily as you work on cutting down the Zantac.

Step #7 (Zantac-skip if you don’t take Zantac)
Now cut your dosage of Zantac so that you are taking ¾ a pill daily. After 2-4 symptom free weeks. Repeat step #6 but alternate to ½ a pill and ¾ a pill every other day. Once you get to where you can take only half a pill each day I would go back to reducing your Prilosec. Keep taking the ½ Zantac a day until you have fully quit Prilosec, and then you can finish cutting out the Zantac

Hooray, you’re Prilosec free! Now celebrate with a cigar, some coffee, chocolate, alcohol, habanero peppers and tomato juice…..kidding.

What to expect after Quitting Prilosec.

I was prescribed Prilosec and later Ranitidine after a vocal injury from performing music on stage. I lost my voice for a few days and had severe throat pain. When I explained the situation to my doctor I was first prescribed Keflex, an antibiotic used to treat Strep Throat. When that didn’t work I was referred to a GI doctor who told me that my symptoms were most likely Acid Reflux related.
This sounded suspect to me. My injury occurred immediately after a day of doing multiple performances, and I actually felt a sudden weird feeling in my throat after singing a particularly strenuous refrain.
The doctor assured me that although my initial injury may have been from over-use, my failure to heal quickly and my continued hoarseness was due to GIRD.
At this time I was in great pain and willing to try anything. The doctor started me on 20mg of Prilosec. This didn’t have any effect on my pain, and after a months or so, I was told to take 40mg a day, one in the morning and one in the evening. When I was still suffering from occasional hoarseness a few months later, 150mg of Zantac were added to my regimen.

Around this time, my GI doctor decided that it was time to do a test where they put a camera down your throat and implant a chip into your esophagus. This chip measures the PH over a few days.
I had to cut out all my reflux meds for 7 days leading up to the test. When I suddenly quit taking the drugs I had sudden intense heart burn. I had never had heart burn before I started taking these drugs. After stopping them, I tried to do a Yoga class. When I bent over to touch my toes, I could feel a wave of acid rising from my stomach up to my chest and throat. It was extremely painful and frightening.  I had never in my life experienced such a thing.

When I told my doctor about these rebound effects, he responded that there were no rebound effects for quitting Prilosec. What is happening is that you had built up a tolerance to the excess acid, but now that the tolerance is gone, you are experiencing symptoms. I found this hard to believe but who knows.

The test ended up showing that I had mild gastritis. I was told to just keep up with my meds. After a few months of taking the meds I began to have a lot of bloating. If I ate a large meal it could take me hours to feel normal again….even up to seven hours.  If  I had a large dinner I would sometimes be unable to sleep to two or three in the morning due to the bloating. At the time, I figured this was just a result of my GIRD. This was problematic enough that I talked to my doctor about it. This time he gave me a stomach emptying exam where I had to drink some kind of radioactive liquid which they would follow as it passed through my gut.

All told I was on Prilosec and Zantac for 4 years. I had off and on hoarseness, and bloating throughout this period. Since I have quit taking Prilosec, I no longer experience this excessive bloating. If I eat a large meal now, I am back to normal within a few hours. I also have less hoarseness and throat problems since I stopped taking the drugs.

Looking back, I feel like I most likely never suffered from acid reflux, or at least not chronic reflux. It seems to me that the meds actually caused more symptoms for me. It’s as if taking acid reflux drugs gave me acid reflux symptoms making me dependent on the PPI meds.

Since quitting, I have had heartburn one time, after gobbling down a very greasy burrito. That’s it.

I’m sure that these drugs are helpful for some people, and along with Nexium (a newer Proton Pump Inhibitor) they are prescribed very freely (Both Zantac and Prilosec are available over the counter in the US). Acid reflux is a common problem, and these drugs are apparently very effective for people suffering from reflux symptoms. However, I think the prevalence of acid reflux disease has led physicians to make hasty diagnosis of patients. Even with clear evidence that my pain was caused by vocal injury, the doctor went with what he knew….acid reflux…and really didn’t devote much time to considering the possibility that the injury was solely caused by over use. I, foolishly, went against my gut feeling and followed the gut doctor’s expert advice. For me, I believe that Prilosec and Zantac did far more harm than good. I wish my doctor would have at least recommended I try them for just 6 months and then taper off. Instead, he told me that I should stay on them for the rest of my life.

Every few months it seems like new dangerous side effects of long term use of Prilosec and PPIs are being discovered. The latest studies show a possible link to dementia and heart attack. It seems like just a matter of time before we see Prilosec class action lawsuits much like those you see on TV for Zofran, Xarelto, asbestos related  asbestos mesothelioma etc.

Recently, acording to Consumer reports, new FDA research showed that long term use of Prilosec, Zantac and other reflux drugs in certain categories can make it hard for the body to absorb calcium. This may lead to an increase in osteoporosis and make it easier to break bones. I am hoping that these effects are reversible, in the meantime, my “All Cheese Diet” should help replenish my calcium levels.

Seriously though, there are a lot of good diet books specifically for Acid Reflux sufferers. Here is a selection.

Lastly, please see the comments below to read the accounts of dozens of others who have had issues with quitting prilosec, Zantac, Nexium etc.   You are not alone.  I wish you the best of luck

  1. I am currently trying to quit the omeprazole and found this article to be very accurate and helpful. Docs are not bad people but I think they go with what the drug reps tell them to say. I have used this stuff for maybe 7 years and have just been diagnosed with rapid bone loss! I was told by my doc that if I tried the drug for a couple of months and then tried to quit it would prove to me if I needed the drug. No mention of "rebound" > I was misled!

  2. I've been taking 20mg of Omeprazol every day for 5 years and I'm having a hard time now trying to quit. This article is very useful and encourages me to keep trying to slowly decrease the dosage. I think doctors should read more the existing literature. There are plenty of articles mentioning rebound effects after long-term use of proton pump inhibitors like Omeprazole. I would have appreciated it if my doctor had mentioned this to me!

    1. I am in my third year of taking omeprazole. In Dec. I suddenly had severe knee and hip pain along with lower back pain. I was also diagnosed with a Vitamin B12 deficiency.
I asked my gastroenterologist if joint pain could be linked to omeprazole. He said he wasn't aware of that.
I want to taper off but am afraid I'll have more problems than I do now. Is it safe to just take half of what I've been taking? I take 2-20mg per day.
I never thought that an OCT drug could possible cause such pain.

  3. Zantac
Zantac is a medicine which is used in a number of conditions. Zantac tablets, effervescent tablets, syrup and injection all contain the active ingredient ranitidine, which is a type of medicine called an H2 receptor antagonist. It is made by GlaxoSmithKline UK.

  4. Thank you for sharing. I was diagnosed with oesteoporosis and Hiatel Hernia in May 2011 and have been taking 40 mg Prilosec every morning since then. First 6 months the medication mostly worked but then I started to get symptoms despite taking meds. I changed my diet. I completely stopped coffee, tea, alcohol, soda-pop for a month (the first week of stopping it and my symptoms reduced by 60-70%). I think diet and exercise plays a HUGE ROLE. I have reduced my dosage to 1.5 pills (40 mg to 30 mg) and have had no "rebound". I will reduce to 1 pill in a few weeks and keep that on for a month. Let see. Fingers crossed!

    1. That's great to hear, Acid Fighting Man. Good luck tapering down, I hope you stay symptom free. I've now been off all reflux meds for 13 months...so far so good.

  5. Thank you so much for sharing your story and trying to help others taper off these drugs. I have been on Omeprazole for years and now am trying to quit. Thankfully I read your post because I just quit cold turkey 3 days ago. I haven't had the rebound effects yet, but I'm sure they are coming as I have experienced them before. My capsules are not firm, but gelatin and full of tiny pills, so I might need to contact my doctor to see if I can get the dosage reduced from 20mg to 10mg. I also bought enzymes to take before meals to help with my digestion. I too have a hiatal hernia. I am afraid of causing damage to my esophagus so will need to be aware of my diet, take probiotics and the enzymes and exercise. Thanks again for taking the time to share your story. Be well!

  6. All you have to do is quit cold turkey and drink 12oz of RAW MILK with every meal. If you start feeling heartburn again, drink ONE MORE GLASS of raw milk. I was addicted to prilosec/omeprazone for 3 years. Believe me, it works.

    Good luck,
    -e

  7. I really appreciate your sharing. I have very bad reflux symptoms after stop PPI. Though I am not sure if that could be rebound, since it has been more than 1 month. After reading your article, I am confident that is related to PPI. Yes I agree with you that Drs should be more careful using these drugs before they truly sure what a patience is sick for. Thank you very much for your article. That will help people.

  8. Hi PPI free,
Thank you for sharing your story. That is very much helpful. I too suffer from heartburn and reflux symptom after stop PPI. Just like you, I never have heartburn and reflux before. The first month of quit was miserable, I have severe reflux symptom which I was not sure if those are reflux. Because most of time I got mucus like liquid in my mouth which I originally thought it was mucus secrete in throat. After 1 month, I start to have pain in chest, back pain, unusual sensation(maybe I will describe as cold pulling feeling inside my body) which I guess reflux have caused some harm to my esophagus. I wonder have you also experienced these kinds of pain when you try to quit PPI. I started to question if I have stomach problems so my reflux isn't getting better with time but sometimes it is okay, some days it was pretty bad.

Thank you also for the precise description of a wave of acid. That is exactly what I felt the other day but I can't describe what is that.

  9. Thank you so much for this. You have echoed so many of the same feelings I've had since being given Omeprazole a year ago -- without a diagnosis of any kind. I also have full-blown osteoporosis so I feel the doctor was even more irresponsible in prescribing this. I am now going to try to get a pill I can cut, and follow your excellent method. I appreciate this. I do feel much of what happens in medicine is due to profits made by pill companies. And doctors know we want quick relief. My pain was horrendous -- enough though that I quit all bad habits immediately. I think that and eating properly and sleeping almost sitting up would have been enough. Instead I am now addicted to a seriously dangerous medicine. And I think I do have acid reflux, unlike your situation. Thanks again!

  12. This was a fascinating post and very similar to my story. I am a professional singer and voice teacher and have had a very hoarse throat for two years. I was diagnosed with strep throat over and over...9 times in 1 year and finally went to an ENT that said i had silent reflux and I was placed on 60mg of Prilosec. After 8 weeks I feel no better and have gained 8 pounds and feel bloated all the time. I plan to have a follow up visit to get off of this medication. I feel worse on it. Very tired, lots of headaches and very hungry.

  13. For those who have problems mainly at night with acid; try sodium alginate. It was in Malox night liquid about a year ago and it worked for me.. but after my first bottle it was suddenly not available (very frustrating). Google it.. it is in the European version of Gaviscon advance at a high concentration. I ordered a bottle of pure sodium alginate through the web and am hoping it will arrive today.

I wish I read your post 3 days ago when I attempted to go off Losec. The acid rebounded the second day and I am worst today. My gastroenterologist did not warn me about this even though I asked if it is okay to go off and on it. Everything you said rings true from my experience of Losec. The rebound is the worst that I have ever had it. THANK YOU for your instructions I will give it try.

  14. Hi.
I am 51 .. will be 52 in Dec. I have been taking Omeprazole/Prilosec since I was 27. I have been on this medication daily since then. I use the generic Omeprazole which comes in 10 mg capsiles with 9 lil pellets in them. I was able to reduce my use to 4 pellets ( there are 9 in a 10 mg capsule) of a 10mg capsule daliy. Total amount is 31.1 mgs per week. This is slightly more than 3 10 mg capsules for the week. I have tried to cycle down to to nothing. I was off of prilosec for 8 days. I tried to use calcium.... I tried to use baking soda... I tried Zantac all diring that down time in order to beat the horriffic rebound. I had tried 50 times over the years. This was the farthest I got. I had to go back on. I started to have severe gastritis. Hoarseness came back. The fire in my esophagus was hell.
Over the years of useage... I was getting severe joint pain.. idiopathic in nature. Xrays showed nothing wrong. Hip pain that was severe. MRI showed nothing. The first years I used Prilosec, I got atrial fibrillation. Or nervousness/anxiety symptoms. I am a Chiropractic Physician. I have never had any of those sudden symptoms. I figured it was a magnesium issue caused by the drug useage. I approached my MD, and he had never heard that Prilosec could cause Magnesium loss. I told him I thought that was the issue. His answer was take Xanex. I never took them. I took Mg. The anxiety went away.. so did the atril fibrillation. THEN... they discovere the drug DOES cause Mg loss... and now it's added to the meds.

I wish... wish I could beat this med. I have tried so many times. The rebound for me is from another planet in terms of pain and discomfort. The other remedies from Apple Cider... is a joke.. and a prescription for an ambulance for me. The eating an apple is almost as bad. Drinking milk raw or otherwise is not workable for me.. Too caloric... to high in fat as well. This drug can be a miracle.... but it is harder to quit than an opioid.

I have cycled down to this base line. To many reading this... will think it's minimal useage. BUT.. now think of 24 years of useage.

My next plan is to go 4 pellets one day.. 3 pellets the next day. USUALLY what happens is then I need to take calcium on the lower useage day. TOO MUCH calcium throws all your cardiac pumping balance out of whack and helps harden arteries. There has to be a better way.

  15. I felt compelled to comment here, as I feel there are a lot of people that don't have issues getting off prilosec/ppi's and don't take the time to comment. I know how consuming it can be to worry about all of these terrible things that can happen. But here's the thing, "can" doesn't mean it "will".

A little back story, I've had Gastritis since late October. I've NEVER had stomach issues before. This hit me like a freight train, and I had the lovely nausea all of the time, terrible stomach burning, couldn't eat without feeling sick all of the time thing. And, it lasted conveniently through the holidays (who likes to eat during the holidays, right?!). So, in January I had a followup appt with my dr, and I told her I wanted to get off of the Prilosec (I had been on it for almost 3 months at that point), and she warned me it could be bad. So I did what I never should have done, and went to the internet, to tell me what I would probably experience.

Let me tell you, I didn't think the prilosec's side effects were worth it, and quite cold turkey. COLD TURKEY.

I'm on day 5, no rebound, no acid issues, slight (and I mean slight) irritation when I lay down at night, but only in my lower intestines. This is probably my gut trying to balance itself out again. I went Gluten free, and don't drink caffiene. I feel GREAT! Better than when I was on prilosec. There is something about the thought of my stomach not producing acid anymore, that made me cringe. That can't be good for your well being!

Here is a tip from me to you.
    1. Don't dwell for answers in the internet. One persons experience, will not necessarily be yours.
    2. Don't stress. I can't emphasize this enough. Expecting you will be sick after stopping your ppi will only exasterbate the symptoms, as you will upset your stomach with worry. I've done meditation, really applied the "don't sweat the small stuff" and its worked wonders. Half of our healing comes from our thoughts/mind.
    3. I was on ppi's (20 mg) for about 13 weeks. I quite cold turkey. I am doing better than I have since first having been placed on these pills.
    4. Watch what you eat. Your body needs to continue to heal up, and now that you are off your acid stopping meds, you need to let your body adjust again. So, what this means is: Try to keep your diet alkaline. Eat lots of greens, lean meats, avoid high in fat, overly spicey foods, refined sugars. Give your body a little more time to adjust to its normal state. Then, when you feel well enough to introduce some of these foods back into your diet, do so one at a time. For me it was all about the process of elimination, and finding triggers that would cause discomfort. Your stomach is an ecosystem, don't forget that. You don't want to throw things off balance!
    5. You will get through this. I KNOW IT, I've been there, it was not fun not eating anything but steamed veggies and rice nearly EVERYDAY for 3 MONTHS! It felt like a lifetime. Part of me wonders if being on the prilosec also made my stomach feel off. It's odd to me that quitting abruptly, would create little affect, and actually make me feel less bloated. I also had issues with feeling light headed with the medication, which wasn't ideal for sure.

Hang in there. People ARE able to successfully quit cold turkey. If you do, and experience terrible pain, of course your story of recovery could be different then mine, and you will have to "wean". But there's a good chance you won't have to either. (I never had acid reflux in my life before, so if you have had chronic acid reflux, it may take a bit more time for you to be rid of ppi's, as they are probably necessary in some respect).

I believe in you, you can do this! Have faith, and trust your body's capacity of healing itself.

    1. Hope I don't respond twice on accident here - thank you so much for your comment. I found it most helpful. I am 27 years old and have experienced heartburn almost daily since I was 11. I finally went to the GI and had an upper endoscopy done which revealed gastritis and a small erosion, so, onto the Prilosec I went. For a while I had never felt better - but now, 9 months later, I am starting to wonder about whether or not this long term is good for me. They want me to step down from it, which initially scared me, but I have been experiencing some digestion issues which I believe may be in relation to this PPI. I especially thank you for reminding others that everyone's journey is different, and to not stress about it or worry that it WILL happen to you. That is the most difficult, and most important part of all of this. Do not worry! I am trying; thank you again!

    4. It took a week and a half for my rebound symptoms to happen the first time I stopped cold turkey. I was just curious if you never had issues as you mentioned when you posted this comment it had only been five days? Some people it takes a couple of weeks to experience the rebound symptoms. Just wondered if you had any updates about your experience after 5 days?

  16. I have Barrett's Esophagus which, according to my gastroenterologist, is a resujlt of persistent gerd over a period of years. I have been taking prilosec, 20 mgs., for about 3 years. I never had any palpable acid reflux until a few months ago. Now I do plus I have pain in my hips and lots of stomach aches which come and go and are especially prominent in the morning.
I think my Barrett's was actually a result of eating at night for years and then going to bed. Not to mention a great love of chocolate. So I have improved my diet significantly. I am a food addict so not eating at night is very difficult but I keep it to a minimum.
Also I just had an endoscopy and there were no nodules. This is my fourth endoscopy. I asked my doctor if I could quit Prilosec and he said no. That I would have a great chance of getting esophageal cancer. Sounds logical but I don't trust him. So I experimenting as of today. No prilosec today. I am also very interested in sodium alginate. Does anyone know how to take it? I also have tried some other antacids and the only one that really seemed to help was, coincidentally, Gaviscon, which has sodium alginate as an ingredient. I plan to start on Gaviscon again before I go to bed and perhaps other times to see if it handles the gerd without these ridiculous side effects I have been having. Does anyone know of any generic antacid with sodium alginate as Gaviscon is expensive.
So far I have had a much better day today than yesterday but that is just one day. I know self treatment is not a good idea to some people but my family doctor totally approves of it.
    More later as life progresses.
PS: I have written many blogs about the medical profession, medical marijuana, chemotherapy, relationships, sensuality and the pharmaceutical industry. If interested tweet me at @corey99. Be glad to respond.

  17. Im taking 20 omeprazole once a day for 30 days for acid reflux. I divided my pill in 5. Last week I took 16mg. Do you think I shoul wait one more week to go for 12mg? One more question when you got off omperazole at the end (after doing it slowly) do you still feel a very bad acid rebound? Or it was during the whole procces?
I feel like i already made a mistake taking this drug i dont want to make more mistakes. Im very worried about it.

  18. I've been taking Omeprazole for about 10 years. My dose has increased from 20mg to 40mg in the last 3 years. After hearing the lastest FDA warnings, I would like to stop. I've read the blogs about cutting pills. My problem, I have 40mg capsules which are not cuttable. My reflux is not that bad if I miss a does here and there.

    1. It is easy to open the capsules and pour out what you don't want. You make sure your hands are dry, (it is hard to pull apart wet capsules) and twist the two ends apart. I live in a dry climate so maybe it makes it easier. You can also reuse the capsules that you have emptied. You can fill them half full and put them together again. I take the losec granules on their own without the capsule. I am down to a quarter.

  19. The latest warnings about people over 75 having a 44% chance of dementia from Omeprazole has me scared, as I'm 85. My gastro doc prescribed 40mg. per day 14 months ago. Yes, I'd like to taper off.

  20. I have been on 20 mg for 16 years. Every time I missed my dose my stomach would go into convulsions. I thought that was my natural state without the drug. As it turned out, it wasn't. It turned out to be a brutal reaction to dependency.
After all the recent bad press, I decided to skip a dose from meal to meal. Breakfast one day, lunch the next, then dinner. I'd then skip a whole day. My digestion held up fine, but I was suffering anxiety, depression and headaches. I did not connect the symptoms to my reduced dosage at all. After all, omeprozole is about digestion only. Then recently NBC Evening News reported the 40% increased risk of Alzheimer's. Considering 100% of their advertisers are pharmaceuticals, it must be important. I quit cold turkey.
5 days later I was totally bedridden and could not eat anything at all. I was ready for the emergency room. I went back on and started to function in a few days. My doc was totally puzzled as if he never heard of withdrawal problems. Today's medical community is run by Wall Street and the FDA is a rubber stamp. I have gone thru 3 Doctors over the last 16 years and they all said I must take it daily for the rest of my life. They warned me of nothing.
The NBC Doc said it is important not to take it for more than 2 weeks, that dietary changes and other issues were more important. Well, I went vegetarian 5 years ago. Does that count?
This drug is dangerous. It is the perfect pharm drug. Try quiting it and it will brutally punish you physically and mentally.
I am down to 10mg and still feel horrible, but getting better day by day. My recommendation is to cut back slowly and stay with it. My digestion is fine, the headaches and nausea are gradually disappearing. When all systems return to normal I will try to eliminate the rest. So help me God.

  21. I also had problems coming off omeprazole. I was taking 40 mg/day and ran out and thought I'd just quit buying it. 5-6 days later I was having severe heartburn and even vomited up bright red blood. My esophagus was raw from the acid. I looked on line and found that "rebound" acid is much worse than before starting Med. I went out...bought myself some more omeprazole....resumed taking 40 for a couple of weeks then started tapering off. Took 30 for a couple of weeks...then 20. Am now taking 10 mg/day and will decrease to 5 for a few weeks, then try to quit.

  22. I have been taking PPI'S for years, after reading it increases your chances of a heart attack decided to go off cold Turkey (pharmacist said it would be ok) well I am miserable, very bloated, pain on side and back, also I have osteopinia. Used the pill cutter and took half tonite, should be a law against doctors not warning their patients!

  24. If I had only read this 2 weeks ago. After hearing about demensia being connected to long term use of Omeprazole, I wanted off! I have been on it 4 years after being diagnosed with Barretts, and had recently been told to up my dose to a 40 mg capsule. I asked my doctor, and he said just to quit and go to Famotidine (Pepsid) instead. He said there was no reason you can't just stop Omeprazole. Since day 6 I have been in hell, coughing and wretching until I am sure my esophagus is damaged. Nothing helped but cold milk and that was just temporary. Do not stop cold turkey unless you have been on it a short period of time. I was so determined but was in so much pain last night I took my Omeprazole. I guess I will stay on it for a few weeks and then try slowly cutting down as advised here. And boy do I have a message for my doctor! The Famotidine (40 mg) did not help withdrawal at all.

  25. I just need to thank everyone that has posted here. I was sure that what the doctors were saying to me was bad, and this is the proof I needed. I sing too, and when I started to have a sort of pain in my throat a doctor told me it was because of the reflux and that I had to take Esomeprazole 20 mg a day for two months. I was almost sure that the pain was because a poor singing technique, but I followed the "expert's" opinion. So I took the pills. When those two months passed I quit Esomeprazole as recommended, and, as everyone here, I experienced a terrible burning sensationin my throat that wouldnt stop with anything. So I went back to the doctor and she told me that it was because my problem was chronic and worse than she expected. WRONG! I didnt have any burning sensation before the pills, just a little pain on my larinx after singing. So I went to another doctor and she told me to restart Esomeprazol with 40 mg a day! I felt helpless. So I started to read a lot on internet and found blogs like this one and I started to have hope again. What im planning to do is go back to Esomeprazole 20mg. BUT slowly cutting down the doses. What do I mean by slowly? the pills that I take have some little balls inside a capsule that can be opened and closed back again. Like a hundred and ten little balls to be precise (I counted them). Today I opened a capsule and removed two little balls, closed the capsule and swallowed it. Tomorrow I will remove four, the next day six, and so on. That way, I hope that in 55 days I will be completely clean and good to go. I feel that this is the best way, because it reduces de doses in a much more continuos way than others.

I hope this comment does any good to someone else.

    Good Luck!

  27. I'm so glad I found this post! After every test known to man, my pulmonary specialist diagnosed me with "silent gerd" as being the cause of my hoarseness & cough, and prescribed 1 caplet of Zantc nightly at bedtime. I was a bit skeptical, as I rarely had any gerd symptoms (ever since I discovered and eliminated the foods that caused it and also stopped eating 3 hours before bedtime), and told him that, but followed his instructions and started the Zantac. About 11 days after starting the Zantac, severe stomach pain started waking me up at night, and during the day I had a feeling of fullness, excess burping and pain to a lesser degree than at night. I made the decision to stop the Zantac, called the doctor's office and reported my problems and advised the nurse that I would not take any more Zantac. All pain, etc subsided within 48 hours after my last dose, but within 3 - 4 days, came back with a vengeance. Its now been 15 days since I last took Zantac, and although the stomach pain isn't near as bad as it was, I'm now bothered with that AND gerd symptoms during the night. From the comments I've read on this post, I assume this is something I'll have to deal with for a while longer. In the meantime, I googled 'natural gerd remedies' and read that taking 1 - 2 Tbls. of a mixture of equal parts of raw (or manuka) honey and apple cider vinegar will "cure" gerd, so I mixed some up and took a swig a few hours ago, and will continue that before each meal and at bedtime until I either improve or can't take the taste any longer. This is a real bummer - I'd rather live with the cough and hoarseness than ever take a PPI drug again.

  28. Thank you! I initially developed heartburn about 10 yrs after having a LapBand implanted... Even having had the LapBand for 10 years, I NEVER had heartburn, ever, then about 2 years ago, it started. Tums didn't cut it, so I began taking Prilosec, then when the Prilosec stopped working well (I could only get through about 20 hours instead of 24 hours), I moved to Nexium, then to Nexium and Zantac (Zantac because it works faster, so if I forgot to take a Nexium, I could take a Zantac and get more immediate relief), now I take Nexium and Pepcid Complete.... My doctor removed some of the fill in my LapBand thinking it may have been too tight, and ordered an upper GI....they couldn't see any reflux, yet I have terrible heartburn.... They decided perhaps the problem was my gallbladder (full of stones), so I had that removed about a month ago.... still terrible heartburn... If I forget to take my Nexium, I'm burning in hell for the next 24 hours. That's when I decided to investigate the possibility that perhaps my band WAS too tight, which was the cause for the initial heartburn, but now that I've been on Nexium for so long (over 2 years), that it in fact could be a rebound effect causing my continuing symptoms. I'm so glad I found this page, I'm not completely crazy thinking these drugs could cause a rebound effect... and now I have a plan on how to get myself off of them. (just have to figure out how to do it with Nexium though, since they are in capsule form, so not easily cut... Perhaps I'll transition back to Prilosec first since I can cut those. Thank you for providing this valueable information on your experience.

  29. Looks like a little "capsule surgery" is required for Nexium pills... there's a little yellow "tamper resistant" band that glues the capsule shut.... nothing a razor knife won't take care of though.... I WILL get off this drug!

  30. I am determined. After 20 years I'm going cold turkey taking Ranitidine as needed. On my fourth day now. So far so good. Really scary feeling. But need to get off these PPI's. Had all the bad symptoms as described above over the years. Tired of it.

  31. I'm working to get in shape and become healthier, so I'd also like to get off some meds I've been taking for 20+ years. I've recently learned that I'm dependent on one of my meds so I thought I'd google if one can become dependent on Omeprazole, and low and behold, you can. I've forgotten my daily dose of 20 MG before and had heartburn so bad I'd throw up. I assumed this was my body in it's normal state since the reason I got on heartburn medicine 20+ years ago was to relieve heartburn. As a result, I know I can't quit cold turkey, so I'm going to start weaning myself off. I hope for a positive outcome. I'm currently always tired and my memory has been getting consistently worse as the years go on. I plan to post here in a few weeks to report my experience. I want to thank you all for sharing, for, it's given me a strategy to handle this and hope that I can get off one of my meds.

  32. Thank you all for sharing here. I've been on this Ned for a couple of years. It's nice having no heartburn but that last year I've had gradually worsening hip pain that is becoming debilitating. No known cause, blood panels, X-rays, MRI show nothing so of course the dr makes me feel like I'm crazy. The heartburn is manageable with tums, etc but I'm really sick to my stomach. I didn't notice anyone else with this symptom. Anyone? Also has anyone else experienced peeling fingernails? Mine are like paper. Thank you all.

  33. First off I want to say that I really appreciate this post and so many of the comments. Also I want to mention that I started a grain and dairy free (and mostly caffeine free) diet before trying to wean this time, as previous attempts have failed without diet change. I have been weaning down from 40mg if Prilosec (using OTC pills and a pill cutter) since 4/17/2016 and today is 11/11/16. I am down to 10mg daily (although I took about 12.5mg today because of pretty severe rebound reflux during this step down that has lasted a few days). So far, every step down has resulted in at least 3 days of bad rebound refulx (not always at the same amount of days into the step), but so far I have been able to push through. The step from 10mg/15mg alternating to just 10mg has been the worst so far. A friend mentioned that it may be due to the percentage difference being greater (ie. 25mg -> 20mg = 20% drop, while 15mg -> 10mg = 33% drop). I have been on 200 Billion count probiotics daily and have been taking digestive enzymes and GI Encap (contains DGL, marshmallow, slippery elm, and aloe vera) with each meal. During bad rebound times I also drink fresh cut and blended aloe vera (rinsed with vinegar and water mixture) mixed with a little water and juice. I jave also tried apple cider vinegar and when my symptoms are mild have found Urban Moonshine to be helpful. When the reflux really kicks in I turn to Gaviscon, but try to keep it to a minimum as I don't want to eat too much metal lol. I just figured I would throw in my 2 cents in case I mention something that someone else didn't. I also want to say that I will be praying for everyone on here in this matter as I know how bad it can be. I will do my best to remember to post again after I FINALLY get off the Prilosec or if I run into any other hurdles.

    Good luck and God bless.

  34. I am glad it is working for you. It took me 8 months but I finally got off omeprazole (capsule form). There are 120-125 of varying sized grains in a capsule I was surprised how slowly I had to go down. I was down to 7 units in the end before I could go off completely. I still have to be very careful with my diet, especially being careful to not eat past 5:30 at night so I don't get even mild sphincter-irritating reflux when I am sleeping

One recent suggestion I have heard is that a low salt diet could aggravate reflux. I happened to have a very low salt diet so I increased it. It is really hard to tell what helps and what doesn't. There seems to be many factors. Only 3 things are clear to me. Watermelon on an empty stomach gives me instant reflux, dairy products aggravate it, especially whey, and meat and oils and fats up to 5 hours before bedtime cause me problems at night when I am reclined. I think papaya pills after dinner may help and good posture. Certain foods like kiwi and papaya are said to tighten the esophageal sphincter, but I don't know if studies have been done on this.

  36. So, I ran into a hurdle. After about 10 days at 10mg I started to have rebound reflux. It didn't seem so bad at first, but after 4 more days it had only gotten worse. At that point I finally turned to Ranitadine and after taking a 150mg tab of that my gut was calm for the night. For the next few days I tried to maintain at 10mg Prilosec and only 75mg of Ranitadine, but after a couple days I found myself needing the other 75mg of the Ranitadine as well as some Gaviscon to make it through the day. About 3 days ago I decided to go back to 10mg/15mg alternating daily and try to reestablish baseline there, and stay there for longer than last time. Although it has only been a few days however, I am now going to go up to a 15mg/15mg/10mg 3 day repeating cycle and establish baseline there for 2 or 3 weeks before even going back to 10mg/15mg. This decision is based on the fact that I am still needing the Ranitadine daily (and would like to not get stuck weaning off of two drugs if at all possible) and that I was only truely stabilized at 10mg/15mg for about 4 days before going to 10mg every day. I believe that is where my mistake was and I want to try a slower taper from now on.
Also, thanks to the last couple posts for sharing your experiences and info. I hope the kiwi thing is true since that is one of my favorite fruits and Trader Joe's by me sells delicious organic ones, haha. I'm also glad to hear of more success stories out there of breaking free from this stuff. I too am now dedicated to the long haul tapering journey and will hopefully have my own positive update in the near future. Yet, I suppose the fact that 10mg of Prilosec plus 150mg of Ranitadine actually worked for me is a step forward, since in the past 300mg of Ranitadine seemed to yeild the same results as eating a couple tic-tacs haha.

    1. Your experience is helping me. Four days of stability just doesn't seem like enough time to be certain. I constantly fight the urge to speed things up, mostly because dividing the doses is such a pain. Based on other's experiences I'm reading, I will probably go a minimum of two weeks before the next reduction. I'm also thinking that reducing to levels below 10mg/day will require smaller reductions until getting completely off. Maybe I should be more concerned about ranitadine use, but as long as I can get by with 75mg doses for intervention, I'll worry about getting off later. Good luck with your continued tapering.

    2. I'm glad that my experience could help. That was my main hope in posting as it is with most here I imagine. I wouldn't wish this whole experience on anyone. I agree with the Ranitadine assessment, as I would have probably stayed with it if 75mg worked. It was that fact that taking 75mg in the morning and 150mg at night after a while didn't help much that deterred me. I decide to go back to a steady 15mg dose of Prilosec and have just about gotten to baseline there. I have a little discomfort but no major reflux anymore. In the 4 or 5 days it took to get to this point I have used the Ranitadine, Gaviscon, aloe vera, Urban Moonshine digestive bitters, and even some externally used essential oils haha. Not sure what helped in the end, but I am definitely doing better now and will stay on 15mg for a few weeks before trying a 15/15/10mg repeating 3 day cycle to taper slower. Good luck with yours as well!

    1. Hi Stephanie,
First off, congrats on getting off of the Prilosec. So you also weaned off the Zantac? If that's the case, I wouldn't hesitate to continue with it until your heartburn has stabilized. And even then, reduce the Zantac as gradually as you can. Identifying food and beverage triggers can help with this process, especially when you are finally off of all acid reducers. Coffee is my biggest problem, and reducing or eliminating it altogether is a challenge for me. But when I'm completely off the drugs, I know that my diet will be critical in the process. You can also use some tricks people have used for temporary help, like DGL tablets, melatonin at bedtime (temporarily shuts down acid production). I've heard that it takes time for our acid production to normalize, and sticking it out is really tough. You don't want to risk damaging your esophagus, so if you can't get things under control with the herbal route, use the Zantac. Lesser of the evils.

      Delete
    2. I have been off the Zantac for 1.5 months. But I did read an article that said it can take 3 mos for body to stabilize after going off. Thanks for the response though! I will try the things you mentioned.

  38. After using Omeprazole 20mg daily for over 10 years, I have been weaning off since June 2016. I now take 1 Ranitidine 150mg each morning, 75mg mid afternoon and 75mg at bedtime. I continue to experience heartburn and have gone through 3 large bottles of Tums as well since June. I am not overweight. I drink one cup of espresso each morning, and reduced my consumption of sweets, salt, spicy foods and wine.
When symptoms become uncomfortable, I take 1 Prilosec for a day or two and go back to my Ranitidine routine. I am frustrated that after 7 months I continue to experience heartburn most days, and that even rather benign foods will induce it, ie: bananas, eggs? etc. I have never had an endoscopy, but will perhaps request one at my next physician visit.

  39. I can only eat bananas when they have are ripe.. when they have brown spots on them. One of my worst triggers is watermelon on an empty stomach.. who would have thought! One possible factor is posture. I occasionally lift up my arms and move them like I am making a snow angel to get "unslumped". I also sometimes breath deeply and imagine my breath is filling my back from the bottom to the top. I also make a point of relaxing the top of my stomach area which requires me to put my hand over my mid chest and let go of everything as I breath out (keeping my back straight). This seems to help sometimes when I am having an acid attack. Along with papaya tablets and DGL. I am down to 30 units of apo-omeprazole (capsule). The grains in the capsules are different lengths so some grains are 3 units long. My main problem is at night because I am reclined so I don't eat after 5:00 and no water right before bed.

  40. Thanks so much for this! I have been taking prilosec for over 14 years. The last two years twice daily. Last fall my Dr warned me of renal issues and encouraged me to wean away from it. I've been able to get to one a day using this proc. Sometimes taking several weeks/attempts to est. baselines.
This does work, attempting to start cutting last 20 mg. Thanks so much!

  41. I wish I had better news to share on my situation, but I have been unable to break the 15mg barrier. I'm actually taking a halved 20mg pill each day right now as I tried to use the Berkley Jensen brand omeprozol and found that cutting them and taking what should be 15mg was not enough. I'm just guessing that a halved 20mg pill equates to about 15mg since breaking the seal would limit the amount absorbed. Prior to this I tried to wean down from a steady (for at least a month at a time) baseline of 15mg (a half and a quarter piece) of the Wal-Mart brand omeprozol twice without success, always having to go back to the 15mg. I am hoping to get back to that dose soon, trying to wean from the halved 20mg Berkley Jensen pill and then stay with the Wal-Mart brand one since switching brands seemed like it doesn't work well. Then I am not sure how to proceed. Perhaps trying to take 10mg once a week for a couple months, then once every six days, and so on untill I finally stablize on 10mg. That seems frustratingly slow, but to me it's better than no progress at all. Hope others are having more success! Also, a reminder that I am on a no grain and no dairy (except occasional Kefir for a probiotic boost) diet since at least a month before starting to wean 4/17/2016 (I think).

    2. Wow, sounds like you've come a long way anyway. I know I have had to go down very slowly.. over about 4 months. I keep cooked oils out of my diet and have very little greasy food or nuts, no dairy and about an egg a week and a little chicken once a week. Lots of fruit and veggies and lentils. Instead of kefir, I have saurkraut and/or Kombucha (has some caffeine), not much wheat, lots of oatmeal and rice and squashes. I have very little caffeine, and only before 2 a.m. Haha, some people probably think they would rather put up with taking pills than a diet like mine but it is amazing how our taste buds adapt and I feel so much better. I use a blender a lot.

  45. I have been on omeprazole - 20 since 1997. I was diagnosed with a stomach that produces high acid content and a hiatus hernia. On a bone density test, I was diagnosed with osteoporosis. I have tried to get off this drug it seems like forever. I am in process now, using only randintidine - 150. I take one as prescribed twice a day. It sort of works but my acid reflux is really bothering me now. I am planning to get back on the omeprazole and taking one every other day since I don't take tablets and cannot cut them. I will see if the pharmacy can give me 10 mg. My doctor said I would be better off taking the omeprazole because of the problems with the hiatus hernia and the cancer risks. I will work on changing my eating habits which will be difficult because when I take Omeprazole, I can eat anything and drink anything I want. Any suggestions?

  46. Lot of good info here!
I've taken 20 mg prilosec for over 15 yrs, many times 40 mg. At advice from two drs. To quit, started 6 mos ago.
I was unable to tolerate 15 mg. Then tried skipping one day a week. That kicked the ulcer back in!
What I found has been working, Sunday 10 mg, 20 mg the other six days. I done this for 2 weeks. Then week three: Sunday and Wednesday 10 mg, 20 mg the other five days. Two or three weeks, then cut another day. After six months I am now down to 10 mg per day! I have used pepcid when I have alot of acid otherwise Tums as needed. As I get rather along the cuts are getting easier to tolerate. I really have to watch my diet! No caffeibe, choclate, etc!

  47. It is very helpful to hear that other singers have had the same experience as I have. I joined a choir and was practicing lots. I kept finding my throat was getting hoarse and like there was a construction in my throat. I finally went to the doctor who decided I had silent reflux even though I was trying to get them to pay attention to the singing. I was put on 40mg of Omeprazole for a month. I tried to come off it and had such bad rebound reflux that I could barely talk. I was put back on it and suffered a ridiculous amount of burping. The doctor prescribed me Ranitidine instead with which I still had excessive burping, which was difficult to deal with at my work in meetings. After several months of losing weight, burping and being rather miserable I read on the internet how to wean off the drug. I am now going to a nutritionist who said it sounds like I had low acid in my stomach before this whole thing started due to the fact that I always struggled to digest fats. It took 10 days to wean off the drug. I have been off it 6 days. I have a very restrictive diet, slippery elm, apple cider vinegar, digestive enzymes, homeopathic digestive spray, acidophilus. The burping is almost gone but I am experiencing episodes of acid reflux. I am looking forward to the day when I have no symptoms for a whole day!

  48. Before 2004, I used to eat a lot of Tums. I started taking Prilosec in 2004 after being diagnosed with Barrett’s syndrome. I have been taking 20mg capsules in the morning for almost fourteen years. In the last month, I have successfully cut back my dosage; first one every other day, and now one every three days. In three weeks I’ll try one every forth day, and continue stretching out doses until I don’t need to take it anymore. By the way, the chances of getting esophageal cancer if one is diagnosed with Barrett’s in between 1% and 2%. I’ll take those odds. I’ll post again in a few months. I recently learned that Prilosec inhibits absorption of many vitamins and minerals. Prilosec is over-prescribed, addictive, and dangerous to overall health, in my opinion.

I have weaned myself off Omeprazole slowly after 5 or 6 years. Did not know you are only suppose to take it for up to 14 days they never told me that part and then only twice a year and not back to back. After having trouble digesting certain foods,... and now Osteoarthritis and few other issues I have made a change. For me it is not because of to much acid in the stomach it is Not Enough Acid in the stomach. Don't get me wrong the pill worked,..but I realized was causing other issues over time. It blocks what little acid you already have causing less to break down foods properly so certain foods try an come back up. SOme times feels like you swallowed a sponge. This works for me is all I am saying.

  51. In 2003, food began getting stuck in my esophagus. I was diagnosed with Gerd and put on PPI's-ultimately omeprazole-20mg (40 mg was prescribed but I only took 20 mg). In 2016 I begin weaning myself off the PPI's and took only every other day omeprazole 20mg. When I tried to reduce further, food again became stuck in my esophagus . A bright gastroenterologist diagnosed me with Eosinophilic esophagitis (EOE)(after biopsying my esophagus). EOE is caused by food allergies which cause the esophagus to become lined in the specialized white blood cells. The gastroenterologist wanted me to take 40 mg ppi daily for life to combat The food allergies. She did not believe it was possible to restrict my diet from the top food allergens . I live in the north east near Wegmans and we have other sources of foods , Including the Internet that allowed me to restrict my diet successfully and continue to eat abundantly. I took 20 mg ppi while my esophagus healed, and I stopped eating the top food allergens 10 months ago : The top food allergens are wheat, dairy, eggs, soy, nuts, shellfish, peanuts, and fish . I weaned myself off of the PPI omeprazole 2 months ago and I came on this block to see how I might wean myself off of the Ranitidine which I started when I weaned off omeprazole. Due to accidental exposure, I have concluded I am allergic to nuts. While the doctor believes the only way to determine if I am allergic is to do endoscopies- I know that when exposed, I experience difficulty swallowing phlegm well I am trying to sleep. I also am allergic to either wheat or soy due to one exposure that contained both . Since I am not fond of endoscopies, I will continue to restrict my diet and wean off medicine. I also stopped drinking coffee but I drink green tea with ginger, and I drink one glass of red wine every evening without difficulty. I also supplement with young livings digeze essential oil which my daughter distributes – I put it in a capsule or rub on my stomach for definitive relief. if interested, see Christy's essential oils Facebook page). Thank you for GERD cookbooks and good advice on weaning off medication.

  54. My life is beautiful thanks to you, Mein Helfer. Lord Jesus in my life as a candle light in the darkness. You showed me the meaning of faith with your words. I know that even when I cried all day thinking about how to recover, you were not sleeping, you were dear to me. I contacted the herbal center Dr Itua, who lived in West Africa. A friend of mine here in Hamburg is also from Africa. She told me about African herbs but I was nervous. I am very afraid when it comes to Africa because I heard many terrible things about them because of my Christianity. god for direction, take a bold step and get in touch with him in the email and then move to WhatsApp, he asked me if I can come for treatment or I want a delivery, I told him I wanted to know him I buy ticket in 2 ways to Africa To meet Dr. Itua, I went there and I was speechless from the people I saw there. Patent, sick people. Itua is a god sent to the world, I told my pastor about what I am doing, Pastor Bill Scheer. We have a real battle beautifully with Spirit and Flesh. Adoration that same night. He prayed for me and asked me to lead. I spent 2 weeks and 2 days in Africa at Dr Itua Herbal Home. After the treatment, he asked me to meet his nurse for the HIV test when I did it. It was negative, I asked my friend to take me to another nearby hospital when I arrived, it was negative. I was overwhite with the result, but happy inside of me. We went with Dr. Itua, I thank him but I explain that I do not have enough to show him my appreciation, that he understands my situation, but I promise that he will testify about his good work. Thank God for my dear friend, Emma, I know I could be reading this now, I want to thank you. And many thanks to Dr. Itua Herbal Center. He gave me his calendar that I put on my wall in my house.
